THIS
YEAR'S ENTRY
SELECTION
For the fifth year
in a row Bosnian national broadcaster BHRT
decided to have an internal selection, to choose
their Eurovision entry. On November 24th, BHRT
issued an open call for potential Eurovision
songs from local singers and songwriters. Just
under one hundred submissions web made before
the deadline in late December and on January
11th, the winning entry was announced; 'Munja I
Grom' (Thunder And Lightning), composed by Edin-Dino
Saran, the frontman of the band Letu Stuke
and that the song would be performed by Vukasin
Brajic. On March 7th, the song was presented at
a special show. Both the Bosnia and English
versions were presented and within a couple of
days it became clear that the song would be
performed in English in Oslo.
BIOGRAPHY
Vukašin Brajić,
who placed second in the pan-balkan pop music
TV-contest Operation Triumph, was nicknamed the
assassin because he managed to eliminate all
those nominated with him, although they were
considered favourites of the audience. At the
end of the show, the jury proclaimed him the
participant with the highest average mark.
Even though he
has been on the music scene for a little over a
year, he has had many performances and concerts
that qualified him to be the representative of
Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Eurovision Song
Contest. He believes his greatest advantage is
his capacity for transformation on stage. He
likes rock music because he can draw energy from
it for his performances and it is the only style
that reflects his temperament. Emotional and
impulsive.
Dino Šaran, who
wrote his son, is one of the most respected
composers in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. He
has written songs for famous music stars such as
Vanna, Crvena jabuka, Luka Nižetić, but also for
the folk music star Halid Bešlić.
"This is a song
about co-existence and tolerance. The lyrics are
introspective and talk about the relationship
between two people, but this can be applied to a
strained relationship between any two subjects."
he said about the entry.
REACTION
The initial reaction to the Bosnian entry was
quite subdued and the song has continued to
perform quite poorly on most internet polls.
The bookmakers are only marginally more favourable,
seeing the Bosnian entry as a marginal qualifier
and you can get 250/1 on Bosnia-Herzegovina
winning Eurovision, for the first time.
Vakasin, has done some international promotion,
although trips to Romania and Ukraine were
cancelled although time has been found to record a new
version of the song, which will be performed in
Oslo, was released on May 1st.
"I really don't get the
negativity towards this entry. For
me it's one of the most authentic
rock song of the year and Vukašin
Brajić is a fine singer although for
someone who came to fame through a
television show, he seems rather
awkward in front of the camera. I
would certainly add supporting
musicians to the live show, to give
the song a more authentic feel, but
I can see this reaching the final,
although maybe not the Top 10." -

AN
ALTERNATIVE VIEW
"And Bosnia's run of great
songs comes to an end. The lyrics
(both in meaning and meter) don't
sound like they fit with the tune.
It's three minutes of noise. Even
with neighbourly voting, it's not
qualifying" -
