THIS YEAR'S ENTRY

Greece first entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 but had to wait thirty years for their first Top 3 finish in 2004. Greece went on to win the contest in 2005, and are the only country to have finished in the Top 10 in each of the four three years. This year Greek broadcaster ERT decided to repeat the formula of 2007,and the Greek national final was held on February 27th at the Athinon Arena Music Hall in Athens. With only three songs in competition, it was the smallest selection of 2008 and the winner was chosen by televoting (60% wighting) and a jury (40% weighting). The winner, gaining just over 50% of the total vote was American born singer Kalomira and the song "Secret Combination".

Kalomira was born Marie Carol Sarantis in New York, U.S.A. on the 31st of January,1985 to Greek parents. Since early childhood, Kalomira’s dream was to become a pop star and she participated in all extracurricular activities at school (such as drama productions, musicals, recreational events), which showcased her dancing skills as well as her passion for singing. Kalomira studied viola - her favorite musical instrument – for nine years, and was a member of the school orchestra. She won the second place at a music contest organized by WBLI Radio and participated as supporting act in different live shows of famous American stars, such as Jessica Simpson, LL Cool J and Jennifer Love Hewitt.

At the age of 19 Kalomira left America and came to Greece to pursue her dream. She participated in the Greek television talent show "Fame Story 2" where she instantly charmed the Greek audience with her innocence, sincerity and polite manners. Consequently her winning first place did not come as a surprise. Her first album, titled "Kalomira", was released in 2004 and included songs with both Greek and English lyrics. The album went to #1 in the Greek album chart and won a gold award for sales and Kalomira was named  the "New face of 2004". Her popularity surpassed Greek borders, and during the Athens Olympic Games, she was interviewed for various  television shows on US channel NBC, as one out of ten most popular artists in Greece.

With her second solo album "Paizeis?" released in 2005 Kalomira debuted as a songwriter, composing the music and writing the lyrics for "Just Want You To Want Me". The album reacjed the Top 3 in both Greece and Cyprus. On her third album released in 2006, "Kalomira Paei Cinema" (Kalomira Goes To The Cinema), she sang modern arrangements of popular Greek cinema classics. The album reached the Top 10 in Greece. Also in 2006 Kalomira was involved in the multi-artist charity single "Gine Mazi Mou Paidi", which was a fundraiser for the poor and disabled of Greece.

Kalomira has worked next to well-known Greek artists, like Despoina Vandi, whom she accompanied on a tour around Greece and Cyprus, Stamatis Gonidis and Elli Kokkinou. The duet she sang with Dionysis Savopoulos, at the Herodium Ancient Theatre is one of the highlights of her career.

Showing her talent and versatility, away from music, Kalomira has also been successful as a telrevision presenter in morning and prime-time shows, as well as an actress in TV series.

The composer of this year's Greek entry Konstantinos Pantzis is a newcomer to the contest, but for lyricist Poseidonas Giannopoulos it's a second successive year at the contest, as he also wrote the lyrics for the Cypriot entry in 2007; "Comme Ci Comme Ca". This makes him one of the few songwriters to have entries in two different languages in the contest.

"Secret Combination has been re-arranged since the Greek final, and the intro changed after suggestions that it used a sample of another track. Howeverm, with a run of good results behind them it's no surprise to see Greece among the Top 10 favourites in Belgrade and the song has also being showing well on internet fan polls.

SAMPLE LYRICS

My secret combination – it's a mystery for you
Use your imagination, I'm not easy, but I'm true
My secret combination – boy, you have to try it hard
To win a destination in the centre of my heart

TEN YEAR FORM GUIDE

WEBMASTER REVIEW

Greece seems to have gotten into a rut since Sakis Rouvas shook his stuff in 2004. Wit the exception of 2006, Greece now seems to be sending highly choreographed ethno cabaret ditties and if they could finish in the Top 10 last year, it wouldn't be a suprise to see them repeat that success this year. However I have to say, this is not my cup of tea.

REVIEWS

"Greece has a secret combination or at least a winning combination as this is another one slated for the top." - David Berlinger (Israel)

"Is that Helena Paparizou’s little sister? It’s a very similar song and presentation to “My Number One”. For the Greeks, obviously if its not broken, why fix it. Even the break is almost identical. Is Kalomira going to be held aloft and play someone’s braces like a violin too? The video seems to be a tribute to the "Blues Brothers". As for the song, its not bad. Not great, but not bad either. Could well qualify because of it being last in the running order."- Dermot Manning (Ireland)

"I like this a lot: perfect for Eurovision with its rhythms, hook and polished performance"- John Egan (Canada)

"Difficult to know where to stand on this one – whether I like it or not frequently changes. It’s funky and should give Greece another good result, however Greece will be sending these ‘Greek-pop’ songs for a few years to come now they’ve found their ‘formula’ and it’s starting to get rather tiresome." - John Withers (UK)

"Never change a winning concept here : cute singer, catchy mix of modern & traditional sounds, lovely performance and finally a perfect draw for Kalomoira at semi #1 = guaranteed success." - Paul Hutter (Germany)

"This song is absolutely not worth a place in the fina, but I'm sure it will qualify, not because it's a good song, on the contrary, but simply because it's Greece. Because of the Greek diaspora there are so many Greeks in Europe who will lead this irritating and annoying song straight into the final and it doesn't belong there. Kostas had without a doubt the best song in the Greek final and had to go to Belgrade." - Nicky Peeters (Belgium)

"Greeks once again have done anything but use a "secret" combination to generate another ethnic song accompanied by a charasmatic singer. Although a pretty strong entry this can either go really good or really bad considering that Kalomoira is not a strong singer but definately a great performer. That being said, a second rate Helena Paparizou is probably going to be good enough for a top 10 finish but definately not a victorious result." - Ilton Kosta (U.S.A.)

"There’s something unpleasant in Kalomoira’s voice. Not a great melody but the dance routine will give the passport to the final." - Yom (France)

"It’s that familiar mixture of east Med rhythms and R’n’B this year. Kalomoira has a ‘little girl’ voice but the overall package is catchy, funky and maybe even top 5 in the final. It could be the soundtrack to your beach holiday in Crete this summer." - David Bridgman (UK)
