THIS YEAR'S ENTRY

After making a very successful Eurovision debut in 1994 when they finished second, results have been pretty poor for Poland in the competition ever since. On only one other occasion (in 2003) has a Polish entry finished in the Top 10, and for the last three years, they have failed to qualify for the final, albeit twice unluckily, finishing 11th in 2005 and 2006.

This year Polish television once again decided to stage another public selection to choose its Eurovision entry and twelve songs competed in the national final, staged in Warsaw on February 23rd. A coimbination of a jury and a televote selected the entry to go to Belgrade and for once both the public and the jury chose the same song and "For Life", composed, written and sung by Isis Gee represents Poland in Eurovision.

Isis Gee (real name Tamara Golebiowska) was born in Seattle, Washington in the USA on October 11th 1972 and she started singing and performing at the age of five. She began taking private singing lessons and performing classical, pop, R&B, jazz, broadway and country music as a young girl. This led to her being featured singing with various bands, choirs and singing groups with which she traveled and performed extensively. Live Theatre was also a huge passion for Isis, and she spent her childhood years participating in various live musicals. By the time she was 12 years old, she was earning money as a professional singer. Later in her adolescence, Isis won numerous singing competitions including winning an international talent competition in Los Angeles, California when she was 17 years old. The same year, she won a beauty and scholarship pageant, a preliminary to the Miss America pageant.

Isis was no stranger to the stage and throughout the years was also singing in various large arenas for crowds of up to 65,000 people. At the age of 19, she was featured on two jazz albums, was the opening act for the legendary Toni Bennett, began touring throughout Asia as the featured vocalist with a jazz trio, as well as finding herself performing with McCoy Tyner (John Coltrane, Stanley Clarke, Bill Evans). After moving to Los Angeles, Isis worked with famous song writers such as Steve Dorff who has written, arranged and produced hit songs for artists like Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and countless others. In 2004 Isis moved from the United States to live in Poland with her husband.

Isis was always intrigued with Poland, as she grew up knowing that her father's mother was Polish and that she had Polish roots. Isis feels incredibly grateful to represent Poland at Eurovision and she says: "this truly changed her life on every level." In 2007, she recorded her debut album entitled "Hidden Treasure". The music industry was quickly captivated by her abilities both creatively and technically. She is said to be one of the very first women in the business to fully compose, arrange, engineer and produce all the music by herself. The album reached #3 in the Polish charts.

In the past year, Isis has worked extensively with some of the world's key players in the music business; KK (Sting, Bjork, Dido, Britney Spears, etc.), Simon Gogerly who is the 2006 Grammy Award winning mixer who has worked with acts like U2 and Elton John and finally Tim Young from the Metropolis Studios (Madonna, David Bowie Massive Attack, Coldplay). The music industry top representatives often describe Isis as a mix of Celine Dion and Lara Fabian, meeting with an edgy Sade. She aspires to touch people's hearts and minds through her music, and to truly make a positive difference in our world and communities. In 2007 Isis was invited to work with the famous German DJ Schiller (Christopher von Deylen) who has sold over a million albums. Schiller and Isis co-wrote the song "Fate" that Isis sings on Schiller’s new album.

The big ballad "For Life" may be what many people consider to be a typical Eurovision ballad, but the song is making little impact on fan polls and bookmakerrs consider it to be in the shake-up for qualification for the final, without actually including it in the Top 10.

SAMPLE LYRICS

I had no choice, perfectly clear from the start
I will rejoice, embrace your calling
And into  a space where daylight breathes within your heart
You found my heart and I knew it was for life

TEN YEAR FORM GUIDE

WEBMASTER REVIEW

For the second year in a row, Pland give us something very American, but Isis and her big ballad couldn't be much more different from The Jet Set's r'n'b track from 2007. "For Life" reminds me a lot of "Where Does My Heart Beat Now", the song Celine Dion premiered at the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest, but while it's very pleasant and well performed, I could see it getting lost in this year's more flamboyant semi-final.

REVIEWS

"Typical American ballad, something Mariah Carey might have sung in the 90s. The national final performance was ok - Isis Gee could work on the vocals though to make sure Poland will finally qualify for the Eurovision final. The entry has some potential, if they work on the performance." - Paul Hutter (Germany)

"Ballads in this vein notoriously fail in the semi-finals, however this is a particularly strong song so, fingers crossed, I think Poland will make it this year. It also has the advantage of a powerful and very likeable singer – Isis should guarantee one of the more professional performances of the contest." - John Withers (UK)

"Just as in 1994 and 2003 a very beautiful ballad for Poland. With this strong song they can go to the final for the first time since 2004." - Nicky Peeters (Belgium)

"It's amazing that having secured a great result with their first Eurovision entry, that Poland has never opted to send another female sung epic pop ballad. Isis may not be another Edyta Gorniak, but I wouldn't be surprised if this did a lot better than most people think." - Ian Carson (Ireland)

"Wonderful song by Poland. Amazing melody, vocals, lyrics and atmosphere. The best entry since 2003 and “Zadnych granic”." - Atmantas (Greece)

"Sounds like a song from a Disney movie at the point where the male creature falls in love with the female type creature." - David Berlinger (Israel)

"Putting aside her inability to stay in tune, Isis sings this like it's from the heart, in that teary "it's my wedding vow" way, that can do very well. I see it in the final and finishing in the mid teens." - John Egan (Canada)

"Arguably the classiest song in the contest this year. The song has lush production values and Isis’ has a great voice. Warsaw 2009? You never know!" - David Bridgman (U.K.)

"Modern pop ballad. A very capeable singer singing a song with a slightly melancholic feel. Almost turns into a Christmas carol in the chorus. Sounds like Evelin Samuel mixed by Timbaland. A very pretty ballad which probably will get some sympathy in the voting."- Stieinar

"Poland will qualify with this well built ballad. The presentation is really good, I hope the voice gets all the high notes. The last time Poland had sent a female ballad it ended up very high and this one could do it again!" - Fluvia (Slovenia)
