EUROVISION 2008 PRESENTERS

In early March, host broadcaster RTS confirmed the two presenters of the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest, after strong rumours in the local press had already leaked the names. Jovana Jankovic and Željko Joksimovic have links with the contest and were widely tipped as being in the running to host the competition.

Jovana and Željko's presented the draw for the 2008 contest on March 17th and appeared quite relexed with the task, while in Belgrade they will be assistd by co-presenters Kristina Radenkovic and Branislav Katic who were chosen by the Serbian public in a casting show.

Jovana Jankovic

Jovana Janovic was bornon April 25th 1981, in Eurovision host city Belgrade. Jovana is a very familiar face to Serbian television viewers as she is currently the anchorwoman on "Jutarnji Program", the Serbian television's breakfast show. Jovana has always been considered the front-runner to present the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest and has twice before been involved in the contest. In 2006 she entered the Eurovision record books when she became the first person to call in the votes of a country that hadn't taken part in the contest, as Serbia & Montenegro couldn't agree on an entry, but had withdrawn after the deadline and was therefore still entitled to broadcast the contest and to vote in it. In January 2008 Jovana presented the first draw for the allocation of the semi-final slots. You can watch that draw here

Jovana Jankovic started her television career at the age of 19. While completing university she received a job offer at BKTV. Jovana started as an entertainment reporter, working for the shows “Blockbuster” and “Trailer” both related to the cinema world. Noticing her obvious talents at hosting the director of Serbia’s national television RTS, Aleksandar Tijanic soon signed her up for the national television channel. Since moving to RTS and the morning programme Jovana has gained a fan base of viewers and has appeared on the covers of Serbian magazines such as “Gloria”, "Svet" and “TV Revija”. In recent years Jovana has become the corporate face of RTS, while in 2007 she made her big screen debut, playing a news reporter in the Serbian film "Cetvrti Covek", which was later released internationally, under the title of "The Fourth Man".

Jovana beat off some stiff competition to host this year's Eurovision Song Contest, including fellow television presenter Maja Nikolic (who won a poll as in popular magazine Blic), actress Ana Sofrenovic. Other rumoured candidates included Serbian tennis player Ana Ivanovic and 2008 Eurovision winner Marija Serifovic

Željko Joksimovic

Željko Joksimovic is an even more familiar face to Eurovision fans as he was the singer and composer of Serbia & Montenegro's entry "Lane Moje", which finished 2nd in the 2004 contest, staged in Istanbul. You can watch Zlejko's Eurovision performance here.

Željko was born on April 1972, also in Belgrade and over the past decade he has become one of Serbia's most popular composers and performers and in recent years his popularity has spread throughout former Yugoslavia. He released his first eponymous album in 2000 and he has since gone on to record six more albums, the most recent of which is a live album and DVD, recorded in the Belgrade Arena, the venue for this year's Eurovision Song Contest.

Željko's music has won a raft of prizes at festivals in Serbia as well as winning two international awards at Belarus’ Mogovily Grand Prix and the Grand Prix at Vitebsk, Belarus. He has also won awards for the music he has written for various theatre productions and he has also written and performed on the soundtrack of the motion picture "Ivkova Slava" released in 2005. In 2006, Željko composed the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest song 'Lejla' for Bosnia and Herzegovina, performed by Hari Mata Hari. The song finished 3rd, giving Bosnia its best ever Eurovision result.

Željko will make history in May as he will not only be the co-host of the contest, but he is also the songwriter of "Oro", the song that represents host nation Serbia in Belgrade. The song, performed by Jelena Tomasevic is one of the favourites to win this year's contest and we could see the rather awkward situation where one of the presenters awarded the prize to the other. The potential conflict of interest was debated after "Oro" was chosen and there were suggestions that Željko may give up his presenting role, however the controversy soon passed.
